
Pawleys Island-James E. Callahan, Jr.
James E. Callahan, Jr. age 93, a New Jersey native died Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Born in Yonkers, NY, he was a son of the late Ellen and James E. Callahan, Sr. Mr. Callahan was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was a Master Sergeant, E-8 with the 5th General Hospital Harvard Medical Unit which landed in Normandy, D-Day plus 15 days, he was awarded the French Liberation Medal by the Mayor of Paris in 1995. He was Chairman of his Military Unit's first Reunion in 1985, their 40th, after returning home from the European Theatre. Jim was a Purchasing Manager with Otis Elevator/United Technologies for 42 years, the Company which pioneered the Elevator, Escalators, and the People Movers first introduced at the 1964 World's fair. His last project was to develop with its Engineers the structure, architecture and purchase the steel and components for the Elevators in the World Trade Center, the tallest building in the USA and the world at that time. He was a avid fan of Notre Dame Football. A devoted family man, loving husband, dedicated father and a very proud grand and great-grandfather. Mr. Callahan was a member of the VFW. He loved to golf and he loved the beach in Pawleys Island having moved here four years ago, after 20 years in Fredericksburg, Va., and nine years in Palm Coast, Fl.; Mr. Jim was pre-deceased by a brother, Bill Callahan, a sister, Ella Bolton, and a daughter, Susan Daly.
Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Mary Jane Callahan, of Pawleys Island; a daughter, Joyce C. Crompton and husband Tim of Pawleys Island; a son, James E. Callahan, III and wife Marty V. of Pawleys Island; five grandchildren, Major Troy Callahan (USMC) and wife, Danielle of Yuma, Arizona, Carly Petrus and husband, Bradley of Pawleys Island; Allison Crompton of Potomac Falls, VA., Craig Crompton of Charleston, S.C. and Cara Crompton and Chris Daigle of New Orleans, LA. and four great-grandchildren, Brennan and Emma Callahan and Daisy and Darla Daigle.
